Black Knights (CHECKMATE!)
Last year, 46 Sailors and Airmen from NIOC TX and the 93d IS, along with 550+ volunteers, helped raise over $50,000 for American Kidney Fund. The donations received by this organization contribute directly to patients suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease or Kidney Failure, as well as individuals awaiting kidney transplants. AKF fights kidney disease through health education and prevention efforts as well.
NIOC TX has been doing this for a few years now, and it wasn't until last year that the 93d Intelligence Squadron has been involved with the Kidney Action Day. I'm hoping that for 2013, we can show our support for this cause and beat the Navy!
Last year, the event consisted of free health screenings, free healthy food sampling and cooking demos, fitness demos, local entertainment, and various raffles and giveaways. In 2011, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro gave the opening remarks. Additionally, we received a package of free San Antonio Spurs tickets!

Location: AT&T Center
Why we are Taking Action
One in eight U.S. adults has kidney disease and 90% don't even know it. Many people are unaware that kidney disease can be prevented, which is why I am participating in the Kidney Action Day Walk. I will join the American Kidney Fund in an effort to make sure our family, friends and colleagues are all aware of this silent killer. We are working together in fight against kidney disease by creating awareness and helping to raise money for programs and services.
Join us in Taking Action
Last year, the American Kidney Fund provided assistance to almost one in four dialysis patients. This year, we will be walking to raise money and awareness for those living with kidney disease. You can join me in the fight against kidney disease by supporting my personal fundraising efforts. Your contribution, whether it is $20 or $2,000, will help fund the programs that provide financial assistance to people living with kidney disease.
About Kidney Action Day
Kidney Action Day is full of family friendly and kidney healthy activities. The day will start out with a walk to emphasize the importance of exercising to keep your kidneys healthy. There will also be an educational outreach part of the event including free cooking & exercise demonstrations, health screenings and entertainment!
