AKF Reaching Out - Newsletter

September 2013

Message from the President and CEO

Dear Friend,

Your support is helping us to focus our outreach efforts on communities that are at risk for kidney disease. In cities around the country, we provide free health screenings and education about how to prevent this devastating condition. This fall, in addition to many smaller community health screenings, we’ll hold three Kidney Action Days—our signature outreach event—in San Antonio, Atlanta and Houston, where we will screen hundreds of people for kidney disease and reach thousands more with life-saving health information. If you’re in those regions, I hope you’ll join us for these family-friendly, fun events. And if you’re in San Antonio or Houston, please register for our Kidney Action Day Walk, our walkathon that supports the programs and services of the American Kidney Fund.

Our busy fall event season also includes our 24th Annual Turquoise Golf Classic at the Country Club of the South in Alpharetta, Ga., in mid-October. And at the end of October, we’ll celebrate the people who inspire us in the fight against kidney disease at our national gala, The Hope Affair.

To your health,

Spotlight on Health: Learn About Kidney Stones

Kidney BasicsKidney stones, a common problem of the urinary tract, are small, hard deposits that form inside your kidneys. They usually do not have symptoms until they start to pass, when they can cause extreme pain. Learn more about kidney stones, what causes them, how they are treated and what you can do to help prevent them.

AKF Urges CMS to Reconsider Dialysis Cuts

World Kidney Day on Capitol HillOn July 1, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a Proposed Rule that, if finalized, would result in a 12 percent cut in Medicare payments for dialysis services.  Protecting access to Medicare for dialysis patients is one of the American Kidney Fund’s top policy priorities. We believe this cut would have devastating consequences on kidney patients’ access to quality care and services, and we have submitted comments to CMS with our concerns. We are grateful to the hundreds of people who have sent an Action Alert on this issue to their Members of Congress. If you haven’t already done so, you may send an Action Alert today by clicking here.

Join Us for Fall Kidney Action Days!

2013 Kidney Action DayOur fall schedule of Kidney Action Days includes San Antonio (October 6), Atlanta (November 4) and Houston (November 17). Join us for these fun, family-friendly events with a serious purpose: helping people understand their risk for kidney disease and the steps they can take to help prevent it. If you have friends and family in those regions, please help us spread the word! Special thanks for generous support from our national sponsor American Renal Associates; our lead regional sponsor, U.S. Renal Care; supporting sponsors Valero and DaVita Lone Star Division; community sponsor Genentech; and, in Atlanta, our event partner, the American Society of Nephrology.

The Hope Affair Honors Patients and Caregivers

The Hope AffairEach year, the American Kidney Fund celebrates the people who inspire us in the fight against kidney disease at our gala, The Hope Affair. This year’s event takes place Oct. 29 at Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. With emotional tributes to kidney patients and caregivers who are making a difference in their communities, The Hope Affair 2013 is certain to be a very special evening. We are grateful to all our sponsors, and extend special thanks to American Renal Associates, Amgen, Sanofi Renal and U.S. Renal Care.

Partners in the Fight: Renal Physicians Association

Renal Physicians Association The Renal Physicians Association (RPA) is a nonprofit national nephrology specialty medical association with more than 3,500 members, encompassing physicians, physician assistants, advanced nurse practitioners and practice managers. Recently, RPA and AKF worked together on a new educational course for healthcare professionals about Medicare education benefits.
