Systemic racism has been called a public health crisis. The global coronavirus pandemic has only exacerbated the racial divides in health, as people of color of all ages have been shown to be more susceptible to the virus. But too many Americans of color lack access to quality care and simple routine preventive medicine.
LaVarne Burton, President and CEO of the American Kidney Fund (AKF), will join a panel of health and nonprofit professionals for a discussion about patient advocacy and to share the work AKF is doing to improve health outcomes for all Americans across race, age, gender and sexual orientation.
The Atlantic's Health Equity Summit "The Power of Patient Advocacy" Tuesday, June 22 11:00 a.m. EDT

Kyle suffered with gout symptoms and flare-ups prior to his kidney failure diagnosis. At times, the flares became so bad that his daytime activities had to stop. Standard treatments weren't working and the pain was becoming excruciating—Kyle knew something had to change.
In his open letter to his medical community, Kyle shares why collaboration and research between doctors and patients can be an important step towards better, more personal treatments.
